Not merely an eBook, but rather an extensive library of eBooks, this application is arguably the premier resource on Buddhism available on the App Store.

Containing the complete offline version of John Bullitt's highly acclaimed Access to Insight website (www.accesstoinsight.org), this app serves as a vast compilation of material on Theravada Buddhism and Buddhism in general.

Included within are over 1,000 authentic suttas (also known as sutras) from the Tipitaka, the collection of Buddhist canonical texts. These suttas have been expertly translated into contemporary English with meticulous scholarly rigor. They are not mere interpretations or essays, but actual written discourses historically attributed to Siddhartha Gotama, the Buddha himself, who founded Buddhism around 2,500 years ago.

Furthermore, this app offers an extensive and thorough selection of essays contributed by renowned monks and scholars that delve into various aspects of Buddhist philosophy, meditation, and practice.

This high-quality material is suitable for both personal interest and academic study. In fact, much of it has been published in printed form as well.

To enhance the reader's experience, this software provides a range of usability features. The reader functions similarly to a web browser, with the ability to double-tap on the screen to hide or display the toolbar and status bar. Both landscape and portrait modes are supported, and bookmarks can be utilized to save the current scroll position.

One notable advantage of this app is that it does not require network access, excluding the search and audio features. The entire text is stored locally on the device.

Furthermore, many of the sutta translations include links to online audio readings accessible on suttareadings.net for iPhone users.

Excerpts from "What is Access to Insight?" by John T. Bullitt, the owner of the website:

  • "Access to Insight is an online platform dedicated to providing accurate, reliable, and valuable information concerning the practice and study of Theravada Buddhism, as it has been passed down to us through both the written word of the Pali canon and the living example of the Sangha."
  • "The readings compiled here represent only a selection of the Buddha's teachings. These are the ones that I, over the years, have personally found to be beneficial in deepening my understanding of Dhamma practice. This collection is not intended to be a comprehensive archive of Theravada Buddhist texts."
  • "Everything available at Access to Insight is presented with the full cooperation of the authors, translators, and publishers involved, with the clear understanding that none of it is for sale. Please feel free to benefit from whatever you find useful."
